The Caribbean: a unique cultural and creative experience
UNESCO, through its Transcultura programme funded by the European Union, will participate in the 15th edition of the World Tourism Event (WTE) by presenting a space dedicated to cultural and creative experiences developed by young people in World Heritage destinations across the Caribbean.
When we explore a destination, we immerse ourselves in a new culture, experiencing its unique sounds, flavours and other sensory elements that enrich the journey and create lasting memories. Travelling is an opportunity to connect with fascinating histories and discover what makes each place in the world unique.
If our adventure leads us to the Caribbean, we discover a region that is a true treasure trove of cultural diversity. This richness is reflected in its 14 World Heritage Cultural properties, 16 Intangible Cultural Heritage practices and expressions and in its vibrant urban centres, 8 of which form part of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. From music and dance to crafts and carnivals, the Caribbean offers travellers a cultural immersion that goes far beyond the ‘sun and beach’ tradition.
In a region where tourism is vital to its development, UNESCO is implementing the programme the EU funded programme Transcultura: Integrating Cuba, the Caribbean and the European Union through Culture and Creativity. Transcultura promotes sustainable tourism that showcases the Caribbean’s unique character, shaped by its diverse customs, languages and historical narratives. This approach directly benefits local communities, preserves cultural heritage and encourages innovation.
The programme conducts training activities for young people from the Caribbean, including courses on the restoration and conservation of tangible and intangible heritage, on entrepreneurship in heritage tourism destinations and the hotel and tourism sector.
Transcultura promotes the integration of the cultural and creative industries in the Caribbean tourism sector, for which it has developed the study Linking Caribbean Cultural Resources and Creative Assets for Tourism Development Opportunities. This report identifies innovative products for cultural and creative tourism in the region and offers recommendations for the optimal use of these resources. In the same vein, Transcultura facilitates access for Caribbean creative professionals to European markets.
At the 15th edition of the World Tourism Event (WTE), Transcultura will present a stand to the European tourism market featuring representatives from Caribbean World Heritage site management and promotion authorities, alongside young regional entrepreneurs from the hospitality and creative tourism sectors. We invite you to explore these entrepreneurial ventures and embark upon an unparalleled cultural and creative journey.
L’appuntamento con il World Tourism Event for World Heritage Sites è a Genova dal 12 al 14 settembre 2024.
